The Cable guy gets renewed in Oakland
After the off field problems and sometimes lackadaisical play,Tom Cable remains head coach of the Oakland Raiders.Cable will never be mistaken for Vince Lombardi, hell, not even Tom Flores. And the current edition of the Raiders won't remind experts of great Raiders teams of the past.Bottom line, right now the Raiders are a bad football team.Occasionally they played over their heads and rose up and beat some playoff contenders. They played with that famed Raider pride and poise every once in a while. Now I will only give Cable some credit because he's the coach.I think they won the five games they won this season was because after being kicked so much, pride kicked in and the players decided they had enough.I won'y put this all on the players, because I think some of the teams they beat overlooked the Raiders and chalked it up as an automatic win before the game was played(Broncos and Steelers). But it possibly saved Cable's job.
The Raider job isn't a plum job because of that smarmy, crotchety, senile old man known as Al Davis. He demands things be done his way or your out. He's a worse meddler than Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones. Also who would want to coach a team where you have hardly any input on personnel and allegedly limited game planning.Mr.Davis has to know that a 70's game plan won't win any games in this day and time.Somehow, despite Davis reportedly looking for other coaching candidates, while still retaining Cable,Cable wants to stick around.Maybe because this will be the only head coaching job Cable will have in the near future or at any point at all.Maybe it's because no one wants a piece of the fabled Raider empire. The candidates mentioned, there were only two,Jim Fassel and someone whose name escapes me right now, both said they weren't interested and were not interviewed for the job as reports said.I don't blame them.I know I wouldn't want to coach there.Somehow Cable stays with a team that wasn't a 5 win team but somehow it got to that number and Davis is delusional for thinking it's more than a 5 win team.Hey, Cable did say this was his dream job.How that is,I don't know.

I'm back
Once again,Happy New Year! I took a little time off and now I'm back.I've just been deciding on which way to take my blog and figured that I wanted to go with an all sports format. As always feel free to comment and express an opinion.
Mr. Marbury goes to China
Stephon Marbury has decided to take his game to China. An odd choice, but considering the bizarre behavior he had during the offseason it comes as no surprise.Marbury turned down offers from the Celtics and a few European teams believing that someone would pay him $8 to $10 million to play.I must say he was quite delusional in thinking that someone would pay him that much.He will reportedly make $25,000 a month. Also, according to reports,he wants to see can he market his Starbury line of shoes and apparel. As a businessman that could turn out to be a smart move.I guess he's not as crazy as his behavior exhibited over the summer.
Marbury's skills haven't eroded. The man can still play.Thing is,his reputation precedes him.The rep about being a coach killer and selfish have dogged him more than questions about his ability. He might've scored at least a veteran's minimum contract if he didn't put his crazy behavior on display over the summer. He's going to China's Shanxi Zhongyu to resurrect his career. If he can lift that team from 12th place (it's a 17 team league),he could possibly get another shot at the NBA.

Chan Ho Park sues ex-teammate
A somewhat humorous story to the baseball offseason.Chan Ho Park has is suing his ex-teammate Chad Kreuter.Krueter hasn't paid off a $460,000 loan while the two were teammates with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was a loan given to Kreuter in October of 2005 that was to be repaid within a year's time with interest.I know Kreuter has been out of baseball for awhile, but he shouldn't have to take out six figure loans from teammates.I know he's made a few million in his career. Also,he's had enough time to repay Park.Park is far from broke, but just pay the man his money. To this day Krueter has paid back $290,000 of the loan. Also Kreuter should know not to mess with another man's money.
Meyer does a double take.Just a leave of absence will do
The head Gator,Urban Meyer has decided that all he needs is a leave of absence to recharge his batteries and spend aome time with his family.I'm not gonna rant on him,but in some ways it was too good to be true.Meyer had a great job,in a good locale, with a team expected to contend for championships for years.Sometimes, someone just needs to take a time out and assess what's important in the short term to be able to last for the long haul.Since it was more because of health reasons,I wouldn't want to see him possibly lose his life and leave behind a grieving family because of football.Good for you Urban, and I'm also glad you chose to stick around so we don't have to hear the numerous Urban Meyer to fill in the blank school.

Urban Meyer leaving Florida?
As I'm sitting here watching the Meineke Car Care Bowl,a report comes out that Urban Meyer is stepping down from the head gig at Florida.Supposedly,it's for health reasons he says he's been neglecting.I would hope it's nothing serious or life threatning.Sometimes it's better to leave and step back than to risk your health.Although it's puzzling to me,I understand.
Meyer burst onto the coaching scene and made a name for himself at Bowling Green. He then went to Utah and led them to a BCS win over Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl.He then went to Florida and racked up two championships in five seasons and had them in contention for another this season. The man has been a winner everywhere he's been.If this is indeed true,I wish him the best.Live a full life and live it well Urban.Your name will be mentioned with every coaching job that opens up.
